Mother's Day is a chance for people everywhere to show their mum just how much she's loved and appreciated. The annual celebration takes place in the UK on Sunday 11th March this year, although it's recognised across the world on different dates.
The celebration, also known as Mothering Sunday, has its roots in ancient Greek times, when an annual festival was held to celebrate the life of mother-goddess Rhea in Greek mythology. To honour their mother goddess, Cybele, a similar festival known as Hilaria took place in Rome from around 250 AD.
In modern times, Mothering Sunday in the UK is based on the Christian faith and dates from the 16th century, when people were encouraged to go to their "mother church" to pay homage (known as going "a-mothering") once a year.
It evolved into a special day, when staff in service were given the day off to visit their mother once a year, on the fourth Sunday in Lent, to celebrate motherhood.
Today, Mothering Sunday in the UK is a massive celebration, when we give flowers, chocolates and other gifts to our mother, take her out for lunch and make sure she knows how much she is loved and appreciated. A survey has revealed we send more than 30 million Mother’s Day cards on this special day!
If you really want to show your mum how much she is appreciated, why not bake her something special? There are plenty of easy recipes that even a beginner can achieve. Check out some of Mary Berry’s famous homemade recipes and put the icing on your mum’s Mother’s Day cake.
Mary's renowned coffee and walnut cake is very easy to make. The preparation time is less than 30 minutes and the cooking time is up to 30 minutes. It serves four people and is an easy coffee cake that provides a great Mother's Day treat.
The sponge has a rich coffee cream filling and topping, and even if you're not a master chef and it doesn't look perfect, your mum will know a lot of love has gone into the preparation!
Mary Berry's definitive orange cake is another popular choice for baking beginners. With a preparation time of less than 30 minutes and a cooking time of 30 minutes to one hour, it's easy to prepare and bake and serves eight people. Perfect if mum has a particularly sweet tooth, you can spread the orange cream as thick as you like on top!
A traditional cake associated with Lent and Mothering Sunday is the Simnel cake. Made with layers of almond paste and 11 marzipan balls on top, representing the 11 disciples, the recipe for Mary Berry's Simnel cake is a little lighter than the traditional recipe, which Mary says can be rather rich.
You may not be an expert cook, but it doesn't take long at all to prepare and bake a cake, and just think how overwhelmed your mum will be when she considers the trouble you have gone to. Mums work really hard and they do their very best for us all year round. What better way to say thank you, than to invite her to put her feet up and enjoy some home-baked goodies with a nice cup of tea!
