Huckleberry Hound is a blue, anthropomorphic dog that appeared in cartoons developed by Hanna-Barbera. The famous character, also known as Huck, first appeared on our screens in 1958, in The Huckleberry Hound Show.

As well as being the second character created by Hanna-Barbera, the show was the first all-cartoon programme to hit American TV screens, and it even earned an Emmy Award in 1960 for its 'Outstanding Achievement in the Field of Children's Programming', making it the first of its kind to ever receive such an award.

The fictional character of Huckleberry Hound is said to have got his name from Mark Twain's classic novel, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. The dog's Southern drawl, voiced by Daws Butler, was inspired by the accent of a neighbour of Butler's wife.

The cartoon series focused on Huckleberry Hound in a number of different settings, where he had a variety of jobs to carry out, often with limited success, although he usually triumphed one way or another in the end. He was portrayed as different characters, ranging from a policeman to a dogcatcher, in both present times and scenarios from the past, such as a Roman solider or a medieval knight. Whatever capers Huck got up to, and in whatever scenario, he would typically relay these to the audience as a running narrative.

Huck was a likeable hound with a good nature, and although he didn't have a consistent line-up of buddies in each show, a few recurring characters included Powerful Pierre, a western outlaw called Dinky Dalton, an Indian named Crazy Coyote, and two crows with Mafia accents. The Huckleberry Hound cartoons also featured Yogi Bear, Pixie and Dixie and Mr Jinks, and Hokey Wolf segments -as can be seen in this intro clip:

One of the most well-known traits of Huckleberry Hound was that he would sing 'Oh My Darling, Clementine', usually badly out of tune. He also had a penchant for repeatedly saying the phrase 'and stuff like thar.'

As well as the original cartoon series, Huckleberry Hound featured on a number of other TV shows. From 1977-1979, he put in an appearance on Scooby's All-Star Laff-A-Lympics / Scooby's All-Stars. In 1978, Huck was seen in The Galaxy Goof-Ups segment of Yogi's Space Race, and he also featured in a segment called Yogi's Treasure Hunt in 1985 alongside famous faces such as Top Cat, Yogi Bear, Dick Dastardly and Muttley. The hound also starred in the 1987 series, Yogi Bear and the Magical Flight of the Spruce Goose.

Huckleberry Hound played a more prominent role in the 1988 television film release, The Good, the Bad and Huckleberry Hound.

He just so happened to star in one of the original classic cartoon series that still holds appeal to audiences to this day, whether you're a dog lover or not.
