Owned by Leeds City Council, it offers many family fun activities, including markets and summer festivals. Picnic alongside a lake in the Canal Gardens - a grassed area with flower gardens and mature trees dating from 1833. Dolbadarn Castle, Snowdonia, Wales
Dolbadarn Castle was built by Prince Llywelyn the Great in the 13th century, at the Llanberis Pass. Once an important military base, it stands 80 feet above Llyn Padarn lake. Today, the round tower, standing 50 feet tall, is all that remains of the once mighty building. However, its grounds are a fabulous place to picnic, with stunning views across the Welsh landscape. The castle is a popular visitor attraction and the tower is a Grade 1 listed building. If you want to get away from it all and soak up some Welsh history, atmospheric Dolbadarn Castle is the place to be.
Kyoto Gardens, Holland Park, London
Kyoto Gardens is a garden lover's paradise. The Japanese-style gardens surround the historic Holland House - a Jacobean mansion in London. Every kind of Japanese garden is growing at Kyoto, from basic "Zen gardens" to luxurious gardens of the Emperors and Shoguns. The attractions include a waterfall with Koi carp swimming in the pool below. As well as housing the Kyoto Gardens, Holland Park's 55 acres are filled with a multitude of flowers and there's also a playground to keep the kids entertained.
Jubilee Gardens, Beer, Devon
As one of the prettiest family picnic spots, Jubilee Gardens are located above Beer beach. Offering stunning views across the bay, the gardens were created by the local residents of Beer in 1897 to celebrate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee. There is a children's playground next to the gardens - and there's even an outdoor multigym, so you can work off those calories after eating your picnic, should you be feeling energetic!
Sweetheart Abbey, New Abbey, Galloway and Dumfries
If you're looking for a romantic picnic spot for two, Sweetheart Abbey in Scotland is surely the place to be. Much more than just a picturesque ruined abbey, it even has its own romantic history, dating back to the 13th century. Lord and Lady Dervorgilla lived in the area (now known as New Abbey) in the 13th century and after Lord Dervorgilla died in 1273, his widow founded the abbey in his memory - hence its name. It opened as a Cistercian monastery in 1275 and today, the abbey's ruins dominate the skyline, providing a perfect spot for a picnic.
