With Halloween fast approaching, kids everywhere are looking forward to a night filled with ghosts, ghouls and things that go bump in the night. Everyone wants their annual celebration on 31st October to be filled with more treats than tricks but particularly children, who associate Halloween with plenty of goodies, such as bags brimming over with sweets or spooky cakes!
If you want to make your night extra-special, there's nothing better than making your own tasty Halloween treats. A great idea is to prepare some tasty morsels in advance, so that you're ready to entertain the witches, warlocks, ghosts, mummies and other scary little creatures on the big night.
It's not cheating if you enlist the help of a celebrity chef in terms of getting some ideas for frightening food and one of the best chefs in the business is Jamie Oliver. After all, he has worked tirelessly to change school dinners with his Ministry of Food campaign that began in 2008.
The Essex-born super-chef has a hugely successful career, with his own television shows, cookery books and an international chain of restaurants. He realised that school dinners had a bad reputation for being stodgy, unhealthy and widely disliked and so he decided to campaign to ban unhealthy foods in British schools to ensure children ate nutritious meals.
His formal campaign to bring about radical change to school dinners was recorded in his TV series, Jamie's School Dinners. He challenged the prevalent junk-food culture and showed schools that they could serve healthy, cost-effective meals that pupils would actually enjoy. His campaign brought school dinners to the political agenda and changed the type of food served up.
Jamie's tasty Halloween treats will make sure your kids are eating healthy, nutritional snacks that all the family will love!
Everyone loves pizza - especially a spooktacular Halloween margherita pizza! Use Jamie's basic pizza recipe to make the base and for the topping, shape mozzarella cheese into little ghost shapes. Use a block of mozzarella cheese (instead of the fresh mozzarella in liquid) to make sure they hold their shape and decorate the pizza creatively. Then, use small pieces of black olives to make the ghosts' eyes. It really couldn't be simpler.
A great winter warmer to eat after you've been out trick or treating is Jamie's Halloween tomato soup - complete with lots of eyeballs bobbing about on top! Use Jamie's tomato soup recipe which is prepared with a base of fresh and tinned tomatoes, carrots, onions, celery and garlic to fend off the vampires. Complete the "blood bath" by using mini mozzarella balls and studding them with black and green olives to resemble eyeballs. Then, simply drop the "eyes" into the soup when you're ready to serve it.
You can save time by cooking dishes like the soup and pizza bases in advance and then freezing them, so all you have to do on the night is heat them up and add the toppings.
