Scooby-Doo is one of the most popular animated cartoon series of all time. First featured on television in 1969, it was created by Joe Ruby and Ken Spears for Hanna-Barbera Productions. The original series 'Scooby-Doo, where are you!' premiered on CBS and ran for two years, with a total of 25 episodes, and this was followed by the New Scooby-Doo Movies. Scooby-Doo featured in the Guinness World Records in 2006 for the most episodes of a cartoon comedy series.
The brown, ticklish Great Dane dog is the main star of the show and is owned by Norville 'Shaggy' Rogers, who is so devoted and loyal to the dog that the pair even share similar character traits, including being rather clumsy and a bit dim-witted. Neither of them is very brave, even though they would swear they are. Both Shaggy and Scooby-Doo also seem to have a large appetite and they have a real passion for food, especially Scooby snacks.
Shaggy likes to consider himself something of a detective, and along with his friends Fred, Daphne and Velma they solve mysteries involving supernatural creatures, such as ghosts and aliens.
The name Scooby-Doo, or Scoobert, was inspired by lyrics taken from Frank Sinatra's hit 'Strangers in the Night'. Both canine and human in nature, Scooby-Doo is able to talk, albeit with a speech impediment. He was originally voiced by Don Messick. His catchphrase 'Scooby-Dooby-doo' can be heard in every episode, usually towards the end of the show.
Scooby-Doo was created to be everything that an award-winning, pedigree Great Dane is not - he has a sloping chin, bow legs, a humped back, a long tail and spots… so not Crufts material!
Despite Scooby and Shaggy portraying a cowardly persona, they are encouraged by the other members of the mystery gang - Fred, Daphne and Velma - to chase the supernatural villains, usually with Scooby snacks as the prize. These dog or cookie treats are shaped like a bone or dog tag, and are so central to the show that Scooby snacks are even mentioned in the theme tune!
Following the release of 12 series of Scooby-Doo, there have been a number of spin-off shows, specials, videos, games and live-action films. Both Scooby-Doo and Shaggy have also made cameo appearances in other cartoons including Teen Titans Go!, Johnny Bravo, Looney Tunes, Robot Chicken, Drawn Together and Oliver & Company.
Every episode is full of action-packed scary chases for the mystery gang and Scooby-Doo, but particular highlights include 'The Backstage Rage', involving a rather creepy puppeteer; 'A Night of Fright is No Delight', which includes spine-tingling ghost sounds; a great plot involving aliens in 'Spooky Space Kook'; the Frankenstein-like monster in 'Jeepers, It's the Creeper'; the freaky ghost clown in 'Bedlam in the Big Top', and the gripping plotline involving nasty robots in 'Foul Play in Funland'.
