Businesses exist in all shapes and sizes, but when it comes to some of the biggest employers on the planet, there are a few that truly stand out.

The US Department of Defense

With its headquarters at the sprawling Pentagon building in Virginia, the US Department of Defense (DOD) is regarded as the world's biggest employer. It's estimated that 3.2 million people work for the USA's military force, of which civilian support staff are included in the tally. With so many employees, defending the country is a priority for the US government, where the US military also boasts the biggest global defence budget, estimated at £402.9 billion in 2016. For gear storage or transport purposes, military boxes are vital for defence organisations like the DOD.

Walmart

2.1 million people work for US supermarket brand Walmart, making it the third largest employer - and the biggest private sector employer on the planet. 200,000 of these workers are employed at UK supermarket, Asda, which is owned by Walmart. The giant brand also owns other supermarket subsidiaries around the world, and earns an annual turnover of over £360 billion. Supermarkets like Walmart use high quality plastic pallet boxes for safe shipping.

McDonald's

Another American brand, McDonald's has a global presence in more than 100 countries and has one of the world's largest staff numbers, totalling around 1.9 million employees. As the fourth biggest employer in the world, it's worth noting that 1.5 million of these staff are actually part of a franchise arrangement, so they are technically employed by other businesses. Food grade plastic storage products, airtight containers and bottle storage crates are key for operations like McDonald's.

The UK's National Health Service (NHS) is the world's oldest public healthcare system, and one of the biggest global employers, ranked in fifth place. Around 1.3 million people in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland work for the NHS, but if you add on temporary and freelance staff, the figure is more likely to total around 1.6 - 1.7 million. Plastic office storage solutions are perfect for keeping paperwork and important data organised in establishments such as the NHS.
